ABSTRACT
Objective: To know the prevalence of the duodenal diverticulum in the endoscopy unit of the CMN 20 de Noviembre ISSSTE the complications and mortality associated with this pathology in the endoscopic cholangiography.
Design: Prospective, descriptive and transversal study.
Patients and methods: We studied 100 patients from 1 of March to 31 of December 2001 by duodenoscopy and endoscopic cholangiography. It was recorded the presence or absence of the diverticulum, the type, the factibility of cannulation of the main papilla, the complications and the mortality.
Results: The mean age was 57 years, 61 female and 39 male, 11 patients had duodenal diverticulum, in four cases (36.4%) the papilla was intradiverticular and it was impossible to canulate and complete the procedure. There were no complications or mortality in this serie. Two patients had multiple diverticulums. Common bile duct stones were present in 8 of 11 patients with duodenal diverticulums (72.7%). In one case an intradiverticular tumor was found.
Conclusions: The prevalence of the duodenal diverticulum is high (11%) but within the limits described by the literature. In the 36.4% of the cases with duodenal diverticulum the papilla was intradiverticular which made it impossible to canulate and complete the procedure. There were no complications or mortality in this study. The prevalence of this pathology increases with age.
