ABSTRACT

Approximately 4 million people suffer from chronic constipation, accounting for one of the most common complaints received by a Colon and Rectum Surgeon. Constipation is considered as a symptom with a difficult treatment and for which a careful diagnosis must be established, requiring thorough physiologic examination in selected cases. Incapacitating constipation is frequently treated by enemas and laxatives with an increasing acceptance for surgical treatment, considering the laparoscopic approach as a feasible and safe alternative. In the following paper we discuss the story of a 23 year-old female with a history of chronic constipation , who after undergoing a complete physiologic examination is taken to a complete abdominal laparoscopic colectomy with ileo-rectal anastomosis, being to our knowledge the first reported case in our country.
