ABSTRACT

Objective: To report our experience on the measurement of abdominal pressure in patients with abdominal compartment syndrome. Design: Case series report. Setting: Polivalent ICU of a general hospital, Mexico City. Patients: Forty-six patients divided in two groups. Study group consisted of 32 patients (mean age 59 ± 20.7 yrs) and the control group of 14 patients (mean age 57.2 ± 20.3 yrs). Interventions: A urinary catheter was inserted to measure the intra-abdominal pressure. Measurements and main results: The main diagnosis were pancreatitis (37.5%), mesenteric thrombosis (12.5%), abdominal trauma 9.37%, appendicitis (9.37%) and laparotomy (9.7%). The intra-abdominal pressure was 15.2 ± 5 mmHg in the control group and 22.6 ± 6.6 mmHg in the study group. Conclusion: The measurement of intra-abdominal pressure is a useful procedure for the management of patients with abdominal emergencies.
