ABSTRACT
Introduction: The prevalence of childhood obesity has increased dramatically, representing one of the most serious public health problems. Since this condition is a chronic disease with important sanitary implications, it is important to focus on prevention, detection and early management.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children and adolescents who were attended at the emergency room of a private hospital in Mexico City.
Material and methods: We evaluated 3,757 patients aged from 1 to 17 years, who were treated for one year at the pediatric emergency room at Hospital Español de México. We registered gender, age, weight and height of each patient. BMI was calculated and patients were classified according to percentile as underweight, normal, overweight and obese.
Results: The group with the least percentage of overweight and obesity were preschoolers (11.5%), followed by school-age children presenting 24.4% and 30.8% in adolescents. In adolescents, women had the highest percentage of overweight (23.9 versus 19.8%), while boys presented greater numbers of obesity (11.7 versus 6.1%).
Conclusions: These results show a high prevalence of overweight or obesity, mainly in school-age children and adolescents. It is neccesary to implement preventive strategies and early multidisciplinary management in order to avoid future complications.
