ABSTRACT

Introduction: Neonatal mortality is an indicator of the timeliness and quality health care to children under 28 days old, which is related to the level of development of a population. Objective: To analyze trends and causes of neonatal mortality, both early and late mortality. Material and methods: We analyzed neonatal mortality of 15,613 neonatal deaths (under 28 days) recorded in the Information System on Mortality (SISMOR) of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), which occurred from January 1st. 2011 to December 31th. 2014, in hospital with obstetric care, from 35 district offices of the 32 States of the Mexican Republic. Data are presented as absolute frequencies and percentages and chi square was used for comparison of variables of interest. Results: The neonatal mortality rate IMSS in 2011 was 8.7 per 1,000 live births, and 8.1 in 2014, had a decrease of 6.9%. The most frequent causes of death were: prematurity and its complications, hypoxia-asphyxia events, bacterial sepsis and congenital malformations. Conclusions: The trend of neonatal mortality in the IMSS is declining. Prematurity and its complications are the most frequent causes of neonatal death, which can be prevented.
