ABSTRACT
Extra-intestinal presentations of
Salmonella infection are rare, there have been cases of bacteremia, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, meningitis, and focal abscesses. In 1907, Ghon reported the first case of meningitis caused by
Salmonella and to date documented cases have been isolated and with a limited number of patients, which shows the rarity of this illeness. Patients in extreme ages of life or immunocompromised are at increased risk of developing extra-intestinal complications. Invasive
Salmonella infections can be fatal and antibiotic treatment is essential in these circumstances. Third generation cephalosporins used parenterally, for an average of four weeks, are likely the treatment of choice for meningitis caused by
Salmonella spp. We report three cases of infection by
Salmonella in the central nervous system in pediatric patients, in order to highlight the importance of timely diagnosis and proper management of this condition.
