Dental trauma in 7-11 years old children

ABSTRACT

Introduction: dental trauma can frequently occur at any ages, constituting one of the most unpleasant experiences both for children and their parents.
Objective: to determine the epidemiological characteristics of dental trauma in 7 to 11 years old children.
Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with school children from "Rafael María de Mendive" and "Camilo Cienfuegos" elementary schools, Pinar del Rio municipality during 2015. The target group was comprised of 643 children, and the sample included 70 children with dental trauma and previous informed consent. The variables studied were: age, sex, predisposing and precipitating factors and type of trauma. Data were processed using frequency analysis and contingency tables which were obtained by means of a form prepared for that purpose. All children underwent oral and facial examination.
Results: ages between 9 and 10 years predominated (38.5 and 35.7%), male gender (68.6%) was the most affected by dental trauma, 55% presented dental overjet and 45% with bilabial incompetence, sports practice was the triggering factor (81.4%); the most pronounced injury was the non-complicated crown fracture (60%).
Conclusions: prevalence of male gender, between 9 and 10 years old, dental overjet, bilabial incompetence, and sports practice were the most frequent predisposing and triggering factors, along with non-complicated crown fracture as the most prominent injury.
