ABSTRACT

Introduction: Very often, there is insufficient bone volume available in the edentulous site of a patient to allow dental implant placement. One way to prepare such patients for an implant placement is to use an autologous bone block (ABB) graft. Objective: To determine the success and failure rates of ABB grafts and their associated factors. Material and methods: A review was made of all the ABB graft surgeries performed at the Department of Oral Surgery of De La Salle Bajío University’s Faculty of Dentistry during the period 2010-2015. The graft was considered a success if, during the subsequent surgical procedure to place the implant, osseointegration was confirmed and there was a sufficient increase in bone volume to allow the placement of an implant of the selected diameter. Results: Thirty-five cases of ABB grafts were reviewed, 25 (71.4%) of which were successful and 10 (28.6%) of which failed. Most of the failures involved grafts performed at posterior sites and patients who were smokers. Conclusions: ABB grafts are an alternative treatment option that can help to improve the bone volume in atrophic sites. However, the results obtained are unpredictable, especially in smokers.
