ABSTRACT

Introduction: the objective of this study consisted of assessing scopes of a participative educational strategy in odontological emergencies.
Materials and methods: we studied with a pro-motion strategy of participation of students (5th semester, odontology major). Previously, we built and assessed a measurement instrument on clinical capacities in odontological emergencies, with the following indicators: diagnostic integration; omission with harmful consequences; commis-sion with harmful effects; criticism of the colleagues, and use of diagnostic resources; the involved group was compared with a historical record of students 1 year previous to the odontological emergencies course, which was given in the traditional manner.
Results: the promotion strategy of participation achieved to a certain degree clinical capacities, highlighting omission with harmful consequences and commission with harmful effects that had statistically significant favorable increases.
Conclusions: promotion strategy of participation favored development of clinical capacities in students that exceeded the historical record. However, there are course limitations because clinical practice has not yet been carried out.
