ABSTRACT

Introduction: population aging is a current demographic explosion so it is necessary to prepare the new generations of professionals to face the challenge, for them to be able to satisfy the necessities of the society with quality.
Objectives: to determine the main problems related to the acquisition of knowledge and abilities for the geriatric population care, in the curriculum of the specialty of General Dentistry. To perform a proposal of contents related to Odontogeriatrics for residents of this specialty.
Methods: a pedagogical descriptive investigation was performed. The variables were: presence of contents and evaluation of the proposal. A period of diagnosis was achieved, in which the structure of the curriculum of the specialty of General Dentistry was deeply analyzed ; and a period of the performance of the proposal.
Results: there are no objectives or contents related to the geriatric population care in the curriculum of the specialty, so the professional competence of the specialists for the care of the geriatric population is compromised. It has been identified the necessity of the performance of the proposal.
Conclusions: it is necessary to structure again the analytic plan of the specialty of General Dentistry. The new proposal suggests the inclusion of a module with topics which develop abilities in the management of the geriatric population in residents and future specialists of General dentistry.
