Ecthyma gangrenosum as the first manifestation of a Pseudomonas aeruginosa septic shock in a previously healthy child

ABSTRACT

Pseudomonas infections are usually nosocomial or occur in patients with a condition where the immune response is affected; cases of infection by this pathogen in the community are rare. The start of a timely therapeutic intervention decreases mortality to a large extent; however, most empirical antimicrobial treatments do not cover this agent. Ecthyma gangrenosum is a severe manifestation associated with Pseudomonas infection, but fortunately, it does not occur frequently. We describe a case of septic shock by Pseudomonas aeruginosa with secondary ecthyma gangrenosum in a previously healthy infant, who presented a favorable response.
