Fusobacterium nucleatum: Is this periodontal pathogen a promoter of colorectal carcinogenesis?

ABSTRACT

The anaerobic, Gram-negative bacterial species Fusobacterium nucleatum is common in oral biofilm and the association between it and periodontitis is well-established. Fusobacterium nucleatum has been associated with colorectal cancer, though causality and the underlying mechanism have yet to be determined. The role of the human gut microbiota in colorectal cancer has been acknowledged. Fusobacterium nucleatum has been found to adhere to, invade, and induce oncogenic and inflammatory responses that stimulate the growth of colorectal cancer cells through its unique FadA adhesin.
