ABSTRACT

Introduction: Photodynamic therapy is considered a non-invasive procedure in periodontal practice, one which reduces morbidity and increases patient comfort. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of photodynamic therapy as an adjuvant to scaling and root planing in chronic periodontitis. Material and methods: A comparative and correlational study was carried out on 20 patients with moderate to advanced chronic periodontitis (attachment loss ≥ 6 mm) during nonsurgical scaling and root planing, including the addition of methylene blue. The photodynamic therapy was applied in two sessions, during which the clinical parameters (pocket depth, clinical attachment level, plaque index, bleeding on probing, and gingival recession) were assessed. Results: After four weeks of post-treatment assessment, no significant differences were found between the clinical parameters of the experimental and control groups, although a greater increase in gingival recession was found when photodynamic therapy was used (p = 0.353). Conclusion: The use of photodynamic therapy as an adjuvant in conventional scaling and root planing provides no additional benefits to conventional periodontal treatment.
