Treatment of the ureteral duplicity and others associated urinary congenital defects

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Ureteral duplication (DU) is accidentally diagnosed because is asymptomatic, although sometimes is associated with other congenital anomalies like vesicoureteral reflux, ureterocele, anomalous drainage of the ureter, ureteral stenosis, etc. Few authors refer to the results in the therapy used in these cases.
Objective: To describe the therapeutic management and outcomes depending on the congenital anomalies associated with DU.
Methods: Descriptive research, transversal and retrospective of 22 patients admitted from 2000 to 2014, including a patient operated in 1994.Imaging , laboratory and isotopic studies pre- and post-employee medical or surgical treatment were performed, and determined the patient outcomes.
Results: It was studied 22 patients over a period of 11 years and followed for 14; there were 12 female patients and 10 male; children under 1 year were 10 patients and 1 to 10 years the remaining 12. Prenatal ultrasound in 10 patients of 21 (47%) showed dilated renal cavities. The clinical course and laboratory tests, radiological and isotopic studies, determined that the conservative treatment was appropriate in selected patients and operated patients had no complications in their evolution (99%).
Conclusions: It was performed the partial nephrectomy only in the patients with obstructive disorders of the upper segment of the kidney with duplication. Patients who did not have this factor underwent medical treatment with favorable outcomes for both modalities.
