ABSTRACT

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is basically characterized by altered patterns of socialization, communication and behavior. Its chronic nature requires the presence of an informal caregiver who meets the needs of the affected person, and this role is usually assumed by a member of the close family. Caring for an ASD patient is a source of chronic stress for the caregiver, leading to serious health consequences, which can be reduced by several protective factors such as social support. The aim of this study is to analyze the cardiac response to a cognitive laboratory stressor in caregivers of ASD patients and in non-caregivers. In addition, it aimed to assess the effect of social support in this response. Caregivers showed lower cardiac reactivity to stress than noncaregivers. Higher levels of structural social support were related to higher cardiac response in caregivers. A possible habituation mechanism or the development of adaptive coping strategies to stress on caregivers could explain this lower reactivity. These findings show the need to develop further studies with other samples of caregivers in which the mediator effect of social support will be evaluated.
