ABSTRACT

Foundation: The Annual Health Award is the highest acknowledgement of the health sector to its researchers, then its most relevant scientific forum since 1976.
Objective: To expose chronologically the most relevant facts in the history of the Annual Health Award Contest in the Cienfuegos Province.
Methods: A historical research was done between April-August 2016, which included a comprehensive document reviewing and key informants interviewing.
Results: From 198, 42 researches developed by authors from Cienfuegos have obtained national awards or mentions in the context, since 1996 uninterruptedly, every year some prize is obtained. In the provincial context, from 1998 to 2016, 274 works have been evaluated by the provincial board and 121 awards or mentions have been granted. There has been stability in the work of boards and various personalities have constituted them for more than four calls.
Conclusion: The Cienfuegos Province has a rich tradition in obtaining prizes in the National Annual Health Award; the Provincial context has had a high quality, based on the relevance of the researchers and researches, so as the professionalism and the institutional support at this level.
