ABSTRACT

People who own further enhancement of Coping Mechanisms, have higher skills to resist the negative effects of daily stressors and therefore have less chance of developing a disease or psychological disturbance compared to people with low individual strength. Therefore, to identify and empower them during the therapeutic process can be of great help to reach the objectives of any form of therapeutic intervention. This article explores the different theoretical and practical approaches to the subject. A final classification and operationalization of seventeen Coping Mechanisms is made, based on various studies of the term and meaning of it for the clinical practice as it emphasizes on the importance of their enhancement. An element of great help is to identify those resources that are more stable and consistent over time as well as those prone to generate dependency. This research points out that it does not consider the absence or presence of these mechanisms on their own, as an indicator of psychological well-being or coping effectiveness, as its relevance is assessed base on context.
