ABSTRACT

Health care students are exposed to stressful situations in schools and hospitals where they do their practices. This can cause physical and psychological problems of the student population, considered very vulnerable. In this scenario, social support is important to help this population to adequately cope with stressful situations. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess familiar, social and school relationships from students of the medical career, analyzing the possible gender differences. The sample consisted of 150 students from a public university. Likert-type scale was designed to assess aspects of interest. No significant differences between genders in the three areas were found. The percentages indicated that much of the samples reached moderate levels of problem in the social and educational areas and a low level in the familiar. Problems with classmates and some teachers were reported. Strategies are needed to improve the social relations of the university students, in order to have sources of support for coping with academic stress
