ABSTRACT

Intravenous fluids are essential in the management of patients in the perioperative period, however their administration is not free from risks and complications. It is proposed a model of use of fluids in the perioperative period, based in a goal directed-therapy, that can be adapted to different clinical scenarios. Liquids should be used as pharmaceuticals, taking into account their pharmacokinetics, indications, dose, cost-effectiveness, risk-benefit and adverse effects, individualizing the prescription based on the characteristics of each clinical scenario.
