Insatisfaction of the corporal image and selfperception of teenagers in a highschool

ABSTRACT

Objectives. To identify the insatisfaction of the corporal image and the self perception in teenagers in a high school in Mexico City.
Material and methods. Design: Prospective, cross sectional and analytical study. Population: Students of a high school in the southeast of Mexico City. Probabilistic Sampling in students from 9 to 14 years old. Activities: Has been requested a consignment letter signature and it there were applied a self perception and Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) Statistical Analysis: It has been used Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients. Significance level of 0.05. Statistical Program SPSS version 17.
Results. 253 students with an age average of 13.1 ± 0.8. 25 students had negative insatisfaction of their image. Regarding their corporal image, the 60.5% perceived themselves with a normal corporal image, the 20.2% thin, a 17.4% with overweight, and only 2% with obesity. In the analysis between both parameters it has been obtained a moderated correlation (0.516) with statistical significance (p ≤ 0.041).
Conclusions. Although it has been obtained low percentages in the corporal insatisfaction and self perception, the findings obtained have implications for the prevention and treatment of the psychological disorders of the teenagers with modifications in the distortion of their corporal image, particularly those that manifested levels of insatisfaction with their highest image.
