ABSTRACT

Objective: to determine the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection in selected groups of children of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
Methods: cross-sectional study carried out in children and adolescents younger than19 years old of the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, who attended the Pediatric Infectology Service at "Fray Antonio Alcalde" civil hospital from March 2013 to November 2015. Both tuberculin skin test (PPD) and Interferon Gamma Release Assay (QFT-GIT) test were applied to each person for identifying latent tuberculosis infection. They were divided into six groups depending on the presence of TB risk factors and the positive values of the tests were compared.
Results: out of the 225 study subjects, 27 (12.0 %) and 52 (23.1 %) were positive to PPD and QFT-GIT, respectively (p= 0.000); out of the 62 TB contacts, 10 (16.1 %) and 17 (27.4 %) were positive respectively. The prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection was higher in GFT-GIT test in all the groups.
Conclusions: the latent tuberculosis infection shows significant positive values in the studied population; these values are higher when the QFT-GIT is used, so the application of this test would extend the scope of the preventive actions.
