ABSTRACT

At children Shriners Hospital, Mexico Unit, from March 1982 to February 2001, a retrospective study to demonstrate the efficiency of surgical treatment on under 5 years old patients was done, getting an universe of 12 patients with an average age of 3 7/12 years old and an average evolution of 18 months, a pre-surgery check was performed, which consisted on laboratory and office studies, antituberculous chemotherapy was implemented based on isoniazid, ethambutol, estreptomycin for 12 months. The neurological deficit was classified by a Frankel scale, finding 3 patients in A grade, 5 in B grade, 2 in C grade and 2 patients in D grade, preoperating kyphotic curve was found from 12 to 92 grades, in an average of 62.8 grades. The post-treatment neurological level improved in an average of 2 grades, the post-operating kyphotic curve average was 40.6 grades. In 6 cases the results were excellent (50%), good in 5 patients (40%) and regular in one patient (10%).
