ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cadaveric donation is a complicated process that requires highly organized health systems with adequate information and willingness of hospital staff. Attitudes toward organ donation and transplantation play a key role in the success of these programs. This work analyzes the attitude towards organ donation of medical, paramedical and administrative staffs working in hospitals with organ procure. Material and methods: We performed a prospective and transversal study of workers of the three main general hospitals in Guanajuato, Mexico. They applied validated a survey of 27 items divided into 4 categories: attitude towards organ donation (AOD), refusal towards organ donation (ROD), willingness towards organ donation (WOD) and acts in favor of organ donation (AFOD). Results: We interviewed 334 participants, 89 (26.6%) of Celaya, 75 (22.5%) of Irapuato and 170 (50.9%) of León. 62.4% showed a positive attitude towards donation, 96.1% reported not refuse donation. 55% said they were willing to donate their organs and 60% expressed willingness to perform AFOD. In the multiple regression analysis, the older (p = 0.008) and better educated (p = 0.001) were the factors associated with a greater WOD. The female gender agree to participate in AFOD (p = 0.04). Conclusions: Organ donation response is similar in major hospitals in the state but less than that reported in the general population (62% versus 82%). In this work we found that age and better education are factors associated with a greater willingness to organ donation and that women show greater willingness to perform acts in favor of organ donation.
