ABSTRACT

Background: Hyperuricaemia leads to endothelial dysfunction and vascular damage throw several mechanisms; an abnormal ankle-brachial index (ABI) is an independent and positive predictor of endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular risk.
Objetive: To evaluate the correlation between uric acid levels and ABI in young adults.
Material and Method: A study was made evaluating 103 nondiabetic normotensive patients younger than 40 years old without cardiovascular disease, in all of them ABI was measured with a 5 megahertz doppler, an ABI between 0.9 and 1.3 was considered normal; uric acid was also measured in all patients with the enzymatic method, statistical analysis was performed with the Pearson correlation coefficient test and the Fisher test.
Results: We did not find a sig ificant correlation between uric acid levels and ABI in all the 103 patients, nor in the patients with ABI ‹ 0.9. However, we found a significant correlation (R=0.75, p=0.019, EF 0.022, IC 0.56-0.98) between uric acid levels and ABI in the 9 patients with ABI › 1.3.
Conclusions: Our results suggest a role of uric acid in vascular damage; however, more studies are needed to clarify this point.
