ABSTRACT

Introduction: hypertension is associated with the high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, the exponential increase of complication rates, as well as, mortality.
Objective: to identify the effect of arterial hypertension on mortality in Marta Abreu health area.
Method: a cross-sectional descriptive study of 910 deceased people older than 18 years was carried out from January 1st, 2012 to December 31st, 2014. The variables included were time of evolution to hypertension and direct and basic cause of death. Years of potential life lost and valued years of potential life lost were calculated by means of the formulas YPLL = Σ 79 – age of the patient at death and VYPLL = ΣA – age of the patient at death, where A= 65 for men and A = 60 for women.
Results: the direct and basic cause of death was due to cardiovascular disease in most of the deceased hypertensive patients; their first basic causes of death were ischemic cardiopathy (34.43 %) and cerebrovascular accidents (13.11%); while in non-hypertensive patients these causes were not due to cardiovascular disease in more than the 99 % of the cases. Hypertensive patients had less years of potential life lost than the non-hypertensive ones.
Conclusion: hypertension among deceased people is associated with a high cardiovascular mortality, in contrast to those who were not hypertensive.
