ABSTRACT

Claustrophobia or phobia for enclosed spaces provokes a reduction in psychosocial well-being and affects the quality of life of people who suffer from this disorder. Having this disorder represents a bad prognostic factor in cancer patient who requires radiation treatment. This report was aimed at diminishing the intensity of the phobia by means of a relaxation and visualization technique based on a cognitive-behavioural intervention that allows us to recognize short-term results. The research was conducted in two stages: psychological evaluation of the patient and psychotherapeutic intervention. Interview, observation and the inventory of situations and responses of anxiety were used in the evaluation. Relaxation and visualization technique was applied during the intervention stage, and allowed to decrease state- anxiety levels associated with fear of radiotherapy, as well as, patients were incorporated into the treatment in just one month.
