Autotransplantation of an immature third molar: A case report

ABSTRACT

Autotransplantation refers to the surgical transfer of a tooth from one position to another in the same individual onto extracted tooth sockets or surgical prepared recipient sites. Autotransplantation of an immature teeth can be an option to replace extensive decayed molars in young patients as an alternative to immediately replacing teeth with fixed or implant-supported prosthesis. Autotransplantation is a clinical procedure with a success rate of 98% when teeth are transplanted atraumatically and when the extraoral time is keep to a minimum. The developmental stage of the tooth highly determines the potential of pulpal repair after transplantation. To obtain a vital pulp in an autotransplanted tooth, the apical foramen should not be smaller than 1 mm in diameter. The recipient area must be 1-2 mm larger and deeper than the measurements of the donor roots to preserve the periodontal ligament cells, an optimal contact between both structures can improve the blood supply and the level of nutrition to the periodontal ligament cells, which can increase the success of autotransplantation. In this paper, we report one case of successful autotransplantation of an immature third molar.
