ABSTRACT

An experimental study of educational intervention was conducted at the University Polyclinic “Joaquín Albarrán” in Centro Habana municipality, aimed at raising workers’ knowledge about biosecurity. Of the total staff in risk areas, the sample was made up of 76 workers selected through simple random sampling, to whom a questionnaire was applied, which was the primary source for obtaining the research data. In order to conduct the study in a first stage, communication with workers was established, with the aim of persuading and involving them, which was validated through informed consent. The work was conducted in three stages: diagnosis, intervention and evaluation. The predominant age group was from 30 to 34 years, category of technicians and the female sex. Adequate knowledge on biosecurity and precautions with blood samples was found, but there were deficiencies related to universal precautions and the provisions to be taken into account with needles and short stabbing objects, diseases that can be acquired if biosecurity measures are not fulfilled with and what should be done in the event of an accident with a short-stabbing object in an HIV / AIDS patient, in addition to the low level of knowledge regarding current legislation in this area. The intervention was considered effective, since it contributed to raise the level of knowledge of workers on biosecurity.
