ABSTRACT

Introduction: pneumonia is a common reason for going to the pediatric service and one of the main causes of hospitalization; pneumonia accounts for almost 50 % of interstitial pneumonia outbreaks and in one third of patients, the disease is caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Objective: to characterize the community-acquired interstitial pneumonia in the pneumology service.
Methods: a prospective, longitudinal and descriptive study was conducted in patients who were admitted to the pneumology service with interstitial pneumonia in the period of 2012 through 2014. Seventy four patients were included and followed-up on discharge at the outpatient service. Chi-square test was used for data processing.
Results: of the 74 analyzed patients, the most affected age group was 1-5 years old children representing 63.5 % and males prevailed (56.8 %). The most frequent risk factors were overcrowding (50 %), smoking exposure (41.9 %) and inadequate breastfeeding (40.5 %). Regarding the etiology, several viruses were identified in 42.3 % of cases, being respiratory syncitial virus A and rhinovirus the main ones. Mycoplasma pneumoniae accounted for 23 % of cases.
Conclusions: interstitial pneumonia occurs more frequently in 1-5 years-old children. The most common risk factors may be changed. Mycoplasma pneumoniae is present in under 5 years-old children. The treatment of choice for interstitial pneumonia is macrolides.
