ABSTRACT

Introduction: The mirror therapy was first described in 1996, it consists of introducing into a mirror box the amputated limb so that only the intact limb is seen giving the illusion of having both limbs complete when performing exercises that will be reflected in the mirror. Material and methods: A longitudinal prospective follow-up study was performed, from October 2015 to September 2016. We included amputee patients for traumatic or metabolic origin with phantom limb pain of more than 12 weeks of evolution who had been under conventional treatment for pain control with non-steroidal analgesics, opioides, pregabalin, and that despite this continued with the presence of pain. They answered a questionnaire to identify phantom limb pain as well as its duration. We included eight patients with pain of chronic phantom limb by amputation, an initial 10 cm analogue visual scale pain assessment was performed and mirror therapy was performed. Conclusions: Mirror therapy may be useful as an adjuvant in the conventional treatment of patients with chronic phantom limb pain, in addition it is a technique that can be performed by the same patients, so that it can decrease treatment abandonment as well as better monitoring both by the medical area as well as physical therapy and rehabilitation.
