ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to reflect about some of the obstacles faced by women students in Higher Education in the construction of their autonomy. It starts from the idea that in each historical moment one can identify social practices that account for a certain subjectivity that carries a particular social order. In order to speak of specific subjects, in this case, young women, It is recovered the notion of sexual subjectivity proposed by Burin (1988). The challenges for the current generations are not in the access to higher education itself, because that path was built by other generations, but nowadays it is important to visualize some experiences of university students in their academic daily life that allow to identify if access is accompanied by conditions for the autonomy construction, a logical destination when it has been accessed to the privileged space of culture. The notions of sexual subjectivity, symbolic violence and the construction of autonomy serve as axes of analysis of the experiences of women university students. Supporting the reflection, fragments of the narrative evoked are recovered from group and individual interviews of two populations, high school and university students as a pre-text for reflection. It was found that the experiences of these students allow us to think that symbolic violence acts as a strategy that perpetuates the gender order in universities and that requires an unveiling of the subtle forms that limit the construction of autonomy.
