ABSTRACT

Introduction: the study of critical ill maternal patient allows reducing maternal mortality rate significantly.
Objective: to characterize critical ill maternal patient according to causes of admission to intensive care unit.
Material and methods: a transversal trial at the intensive care unit´s “Carlos Manuel de Céspedes" General University Hospital in Bayamo, Granma was carried out during the period of time, from January 1st 2013 to December 31, 2015. The sample was 82 patients.
Results: the obstetric entities were the principal cause of admission, followed for the clinics and surgical ones. Uterine atony, severe preeclampsia disease and endometritis were the main causes of admission in relation with pregnancy. Pneumonia was the main clinical illness found and acute appendicitis was the surgical one. The medial age (standard deviation) in the patients with obstetric causes was 28.2 years (SD ± 7.5); with clinic diseases 26.4 years (SD ± 6.1) and with surgical diseases was 25.6 years (SD ± 4.0). The medial gestational age was similar in the three categories. Over puerperium occurred the biggest obstetric diseases percentage (87.0 %) and admissions by caesarean, 38 (82.6 %). Three maternal deaths occurred one in each admission causes group.
Conclusions: obstetric diseases were the principal cause of admission, represented by uterine atony.
