Acupuncture as alternative therapeutic approach in fibromyalgia

ABSTRACT

Introduction: fibromyalgia is a chronic disease, not articulate, frequent and complex, it is the second most common disease in rheumatology consultation and 75% of patients are women; considered acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine seeks expanded globally heuristically incorporated as an adjunctive method in relieving pain that occurs in patients with this condition.
Objective: To describe the therapeutic approach of fibromyalgia using acupuncture, through literature review, an integrative approach to treatment.
Method: this is a review article, conducted by searching electronic database, in PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, Elsevier, being more than 633 items, from 2010 to February 2016, the who selected only 39 for this review, about fibromyalgia and acupuncture gathered evidence of higher quality in accordance with the criteria Grading of Recommendations of Assessment Development and Evaluations regarding the usefulness of it as a complementary or sole therapy in improving patient affected by fibromyalgia.
Results: it was found that acupuncture is an alternative in the management of pain in patients with fibromyalgia, that for best results, use synchronously deserves all the points that can be beneficial in relieving pain.
Conclusion: there is still the need to further investigate the effectiveness of acupuncture in standardized form to apply and use it as an alternative non-drug treatment in the management of fibromyalgia.
