ABSTRACT

Since we come into the world, every day that passes, in some way it could be said that we age, and this process is accelerated with the passage of the years, affecting the physical, physiological, cognitive and psychological functioning of the persons. The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI, 2014) reports a life expectancy of just over 77 years for women and 72 years for men in the following years. So it is important that the practitioner including health psychologist can learn ways to support the intervention in this population. It described the deterioration of certain cognitive functions during aging and physical activity in relation to better brain integrity that promotes proper cognitive performance in older adults, therefore, an alternative treatment for these conditions is practicing martial arts, seeking to promote successful aging. Tai Chi is a gentle, low impact martial art that is relaxed and harmonious movements combined with diaphragmatic breathing, on a par with high mental concentration. They have reported multiple benefits to health in the practice of Tai Chi, in certain diseases, in neuropsychological aspects (improvement in care) and psychological (reduction of anxiety and depression). So the aim of this review is to give an overview of the elderly and how to practice the martial art Tai Chi can positively impact the psychological and cognitive aspects of this population.
