Balance between positive and negative automatic thoughts and their relationship with the academic performance of students of engineering

ABSTRACT

The emotional style has recently emerged as a key factor in subjective well-being, and has been researched widely in different cultures, with wellvalidated measures. This study reports the ratio between automatic positive and negative thoughts, and optimism-pessimism ratio in a sample of students of a public university in the State of Morelos in Mexico. Gender differences in factors Positive Self-Evaluation and Other’s Evaluation of the Self, Pessimism Scale and the Balance of orientation were obtained. Inverse relationships between negative automatic thoughts and the scale of pessimism, with school performance were found, and interactions were found between optimismpessimism balance and students’ performance. These data show a proper relationship between positive and negative emotions in the College students sample.
