ABSTRACT

Introduction: dental assistance in disabled patients requires managements and special equipments, promotional and health prevention activities are necessary starting from childhood and keep on during all the life, application of good clinical practices to avoid the appearance or aggravation of the pre-existing stomatological disorders are also needed to improve on.
Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational intervention “I learn how to keep my teeth” in pupils from La Edad de Oro Special Primary School.
Method: an educational intervention study to modify the knowledge and behavior on buccal health in a group of disabled children from La Edad de Oro Special Primary School was done from October 2014 to February 2015 in Holguín city. The universe comprised 137 students and the sample 58.
Results: according to physical disability the group of students that prevailed was the ones having a squint with 60.3%. The level of knowledge on oral health before the intervention was bad in 70.7% of the students, none of them was good. After the intervention there was an improvement on knowledge in 84.5% students, children with partial loss of hearing obtained regular, nobody obtained a bad evaluation. At the beginning of the intervention the buccal brushing was poor in the 91.4% of pupils and at the end only 32.8% had difficulties on this.
Conclusions: when the educational intervention finished the children improved their knowledge on oral health, the dental brushing was efficient in the majority of them.
