ABSTRACT

Gallstones have been a known entity for more than 3500 years, these stones were even found in the gallbladder of Egyptian and Chinese mummies. From 5 to 15% of the world population has colelithiasis. Despite being common, most are asymptomatic and only 20% will have symptoms compatible with bile colic. Between 1 to 2% of these patients will suffer some complication per year and will require gallbladder removal surgery. Each year 700,000 cholecystectomies are performed in the United States and 50,000 in the United Kingdom. Clinical indications for cholecystectomy have not changed in the last 20 years: biliary colic, acute or chronic cholecystitis and pancreatitis due to gallstones. Laparoscopic exploration of the bile duct has been described as an effective and safe method for extracting gallstones from the bile duct, two pathways are known: transcystic and choledochotomy. Like any other surgical procedure the surgeon´s ability and skills are vital, a suitable professional is required to perform a laparoscopic exploration.
