ABSTRACT

Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of the combined and magnetic therapy compared to drug therapy used to treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Methods: a quasi-experimental study was performed in patients treated at the Rehabilitation Polyclinic July 26, Mayarí, during the period January 2011 to September 2013, with the aim of analyzing age, gender, type of treatment applied and remission time. The relationship of these variables to the effectiveness of the proposed treatment was established. Results: the universe and sample agreed, for a total of 242 patients. An arithmetic mean of 49,8 years was obtained, with a standard deviation of 13,5. The frequency of vertigo increased from the fourth decade of life, the age range that prevailed was among 42 to 50 years, mean age at presentation of 50 years, the ratio was 2:1 to BPPV dominance female. A ratio of 4 per 1 rehabilitated patients who did not (194/48=4,0) was determined, the women had 20 (83/3) and seven men (31/4) times more likely to improve with physical therapy with medications. Physical therapy was effective (p< 0,05) and all symptoms resolved in 15 sessions. Conclusions: treatment with combined magnetic therapy was an effective noninvasive alternative option to proced, accessible, with improvement in a short period and lasting results.
