ABSTRACT

Eagle syndrome is defined as the elongation of the styloid process and calcification of the stylohyoid ligament; it is characterized by painful pharyngeal symptomatology, odynophagia, dysphagia, headache, irradiation of pain to the ear and neck pain. The average length of the styloid process is 2.5 cm. The etiology of the syndrome is poorly understood. We report the case of a 53-year-old male patient with neck pain, lateral neck pain, limitation of neck laterality movements. He initiated our protocol for stylohyoid ligament excision with an extended submandibular type extraoral approach. The objective of the article is to present the advantages of the extraoral approach for this pathology, as well as the post-surgical complementary therapy used at the «Adolfo López Mateos» Regional Hospital.
