ABSTRACT

Introduction: bowel intussusception is one of the most common causes of intestinal obstruction in children during the first year of life, and it occurs when a segment of the intestine slides inside another adjacent segment.
Objective: to characterize children with bowel intussusception treated by the technique of ultrasound-guided hydrostatic reduction at “José Luis Miranda“ University Hospital from Santa Clara between January, 2009 and February, 2015.
Methods: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in 68 patients over three months of age and under two years, in which the diagnosis of bowel intussusception was confirmed; the technique of hydrostatic reduction using saline solution was applied by means of sonographic examination.
Results: white, male eutrophic children under six months of age predominated (55.9 %). The main risk factor was the introduction of new foods (29.4 %). Cardinal signs and symptoms were irritability and presence of blood during rectal examination in the 91.2 % and 79.4 %, respectively. There were no procedure-related complications; the technique of hydrostatic reduction was effective in the 95.6 % of patients.
Conclusions: bowel intussusception occurred more often in the first months of life; hydrostatic reduction was used as the treatment method, which had very effective results, without associated complications, and with a good prognosis in these patients.
