ABSTRACT

There are few psychosocial studies on symptoms of pregnancy in men, or couvade symptoms. The objective was to give evidence and analyze the meanings and experiences of a father who presented these symptoms. Participated a 30-year-old man, living in Mexico City, who is the father of two children. He was interviewed about couvade-like symptoms during pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum. It was found that this man presented couvade symptoms only in the first pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, cravings, bellyache, which are similar to the most common found in other latitudes. These symptoms were partially similar to those experienced by his partner. It is concluded that couvade symptoms, addressed qualitatively, contextually and biographically, imply biological, psychological, social and cultural dimensions that are interdependent.
