ABSTRACT

Background: The aim of occupational rehabilitation is to optimize participation in educational activities or employment to people with disabilities. A large percentage of users who begin the process does not conclude and the causes are unknown. The aim of this study is to identify these determinants in population of the National Institute of Rehabilitation. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was made through a telephone interview to users from November 2013 to April 2015, in order to identify their socio-cultural situation, the last phase of the process which was attended, the reason for abandonment, if the goal set at the beginning was achieved and current work or school activity. 78 people were included. Results: Only 18% of users concluded the process; the main causes of abandonment are familiar, economic and disease, but most leave the process without specific cause. Regardless of the stage of abandonment 28% achieved the goal set at the beginning of the program. Conclusions: The main cause of abandonment is the loss of interest, so it is necessary to improve the approach to targets. Users who complete the process are more likely to participate in school or work activity compared to those who do not conclude.
