Suffering experienced by elderlies who live with venous ulcer

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The varicose ulcer is characterized for being a skin lesion that affects the lower third of the legs from 1-2% of the population, and is therefore the most common among people older than 65 years. This is not only a physical lesion, nut a mark that provokes negative stimuli to the individuals lives and the suffering becomes part of their daily life.
Objective: Analyze the suffering experienced by the elderly who live with venous ulcers.
Methods: Descriptive study with a qualitative approach performed in 2012 with eight participants at a Physiotherapy Clinic of Bahía. The information was collected by mean of semi-structures interviews and the data analyzed by means of the Bardin technique of thematic content analysis.
Results: These point that the suffering experienced by the elderly people who live with venous ulcers was marked by pain, by frequent relapses and daily limitations.
Conclusions: The suffering is not only a physical one, but it also affects the decomposition of the interest groups regarding biological, psychologic, emotional and social well-being. Therefore, it is necessary for the nurses to valuate not only their technical knowledge but also the life experienced of the elderly and the subjective aspects around their lives.
