ABSTRACT

Background: Systemic steroids are an effective pharmacological tool in diverse otolaryngological conditions.
Objetive: To know real life conditions at clinical and surgical level where systemic steroids are used by otolaryngologists in Mexico.
Material and Method: A survey was conducted among Mexican Otolaryngologists who attended the 2013 medical congress of the Federación Mexicana de Otorrinolaringología y Cirugía de Cabeza y Cuello, AC.
Results: A total of 163 surveys were collected; 98% (n = 160) otolaryngologists answered that they prescribe systemic steroids in their clinical and surgical practice. The main conditions for which they prescribe systemic steroids were asthma exacerbations (n = 109, 67%), acute laryngitis (n = 107, 66%) and chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps (n = 106, 65%); 31% (50) of otolaryngologists referred the duration of use of such medications for 6 to 10 days on average. The main reason for both pre-surgical (70%) and post-surgical (50%) usage was chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps. The main type of steroid used according to potency was short acting; 72% (n = 118) did not observe adverse events related to systemic use.
Conclusions: Systemic steroids are important tool of anti-inflammatory therapy for otolaryngological conditions. The use was due to acute or chronic reasons.
