ABSTRACT

Health literacy (HL) is the ability of individuals to access and use information to make decisions about their health. It is a multidisciplinary concept in which information plays a central role. A narrative review is presented of the research concerning HL reported from 2014 and 2016 in the literature about biomedicine, library and information science (LIS) contained in the databases PubMed and LISA. Results show that biomedical literature centers on the health personnel, the patients and the health system, though recognition is also provided to the need to view HL as a concern of the entire community. The LIS literature claims a role in HL promotion, advocating collaborative work, though no progress has so far been made in the application of strategies aimed at approaching the community impact of Health literacy.
