ABSTRACT

Introduction: The first reported cases of HIV date back to 1981, since then a pandemic of infection has developed worldwide. This is one of the emerging diseases that have increased in recent years and Cuba does not escape this trend. Adverse effects to medications, opportunistic infections and the symptoms of HIV make this population predisposed to limit its functional abilities. Rehabilitation interventions are based on functional deficits rather than disease progression, suggesting that physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation have the appropriate knowledge to handle the majority of HIV-related disability.
Objective: To expand the knowledge of rehabilitation professionals on the management of patients with HIV/AIDS.
Method: A review of the topic was performed in the Lilacs, Ebsco, Cochrane Library and Pubmed databases. The search strategy was developed between June and July 2017.
Conclusions: It is of vital importance that all rehabilitation professionals know the management of these patients and create action protocols for the rehabilitation of patients with HIV / AIDS in all rehabilitation services in the country.
