ABSTRACT

Asthma exacerbations, asthma attacks or attacks (acute asthma) are episodes of dyspnea of more or less rapid onset, usually accompanied by wheezing, coughing and chest tightness. The term critical asthma syndrome represents the onset of the most severe form of asthma exacerbation and it is used to define the sudden, severe respiratory condition which, despite requiring urgent treatment, has not progressed to a state of irreversible hypoxia and cardiorespiratory arrest. All critical asthma syndromes require treatment in an emergency department, and most of the time require hospitalization. This article discusses specific management in children with critical asthma syndrome in a hospital environment focused on intensive care. It encompasses the initial evaluation, hemodynamic disorders, initial ventilatory treatment and pharmacology. It is vital not to underestimate the potential severity of the crisis. For this reason, it is essential to make a quick and precise assessment of a series of parameters that will allow us to classify the type of crisis we are facing.
