Purple urine bag syndrome

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The purple colour of the urine bag, in patients with permanent catheterization of the urinary system, is an infrequent and alarming eventuality in the medical practice. Objective: Present the clinical peculiarities and of laboratory and the treatment applied, to a new case of syndrome of urine bag of purple colour. Case presentation: Patient of 69 years of age with diagnostic of adenocarcinoma of the prostate, with tumoral infiltration of the prostatic urethra and renal insufficiency I in grade, reason whereby used permanent urethral probe. After 5 months in this condition presented in the external query of Urology of the Multiperfil Clinic of Luanda, for having noticed purple colour of the urine bag. In this moment the patient was asymptomatic, nevertheless the urine extracted of the urine bag was muddy, fetid and yellow in color. It took regularly folic acid and ferrous fumarate for suffering anaemia, what produced him severe constipation. The studies of blood were normal no like this the ones of the urine, isolating Proteus mirabilis in the urine culture. It indicated him specific antibiotic treatment, laxatives and changed the urethral probe and the urine bag, disappearing the above‐mentioned atypical colour. Conclusions: The urinary infection and the constipation favour the apparition of the purple colour of the urine bag. This situation achieves come back treating the said factors, and changing the probe and the urine bag by other new.
