ABSTRACT

Objective: A critical study about the effect of maternal presence and skin to skin contact with premature neonate is presented. Methods: This article emphasizes the context of prematurity, psychological and physiological benefits of maternal contact and concrete proposals that can be provided in the Intensive Care Unit. Results: Refers some of the barriers that repeatedly prevent contact between mother and baby, normally due to ignorance of the benefits involved. Conclusions: Provides a set of recommendations for physicians and nurses, regarding empathy with interactive situation between mother and newborn.
