ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess the influence of parental knowledge about asthma on the control of asthmatic children. Material and methods: An observational, descriptive and transversal study was conducted at the “Osio de Cua” Hospital, Miranda state, Venezuela, between August 2013 and May 2015. The universe consisted of 273 parents of children less than 12 years of age who went to the pediatric emergency department with a clinical history of asthma; the sample consisted of 189. The information was obtained through a questionnaire. Results: 25.4% parents knew enough about asthma, 12.2% about the triggers of asthmatic crisis and 35.4% about manifestations. Knowledge on crisis prevention measures was insufficient in 62.4% of parents; in 83.6%, on drugs for crisis prevention, and in 57.1%, on their treatment. Overall, 28.4% of participants showed sufficient knowledge about asthma. 88.7% of the children of parents with sufficient knowledge about the disease were controlled and 61% of those with insufficient knowledge were uncontrolled. In 92.2% of those controlled patients, their parents showed sufficient knowledge, and all of those not controlled their parents had with insufficient knowledge. Conclusions: Most parents showed insufficient knowledge about asthma and their asthmatic children were poorly controlled.
